Eniola Shokunbi now sixth grader at Commodore MacDonough STEM Academy in  Connecticut, was drawn to the need for better air quality due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Eniola set her sights on developing an air filter system. Utilizing a low-cost combination of furnace filters, a box fan, duct tape, and cardboard, Eniola was able to prototype her design for just $60 per unit, making it the most cost-effective alternative to commercial air purifiers. Her invention not only eliminates over 99% of airborne viruses, but has received 11.5 million dollars in funding.

Heman Bekele whipped up the most dangerous of what he called his “potions” when he was just over 7 years old. Known for mixing things and putting them under his bed, eventually found a goal: to create a soap that could treat skin cancer and make it affordable to everyone that needs it. Heman won the 3M young scientists challenge and was the Time Magazine’s 2024 kid of the year.
